Andy Murray Wins Wimbledon Sunday July 7th 2013!

Ones To Watch

Andy Murray won his first Wimbledon title against Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic on Sunday July 7, 2013 becoming the first British tennis player to win the men’s singles final since Fred Perry in 1936. The crowd watched as he fell to his knees in relief after winning three straight sets in what was the hottest day of 2013 so far, with temperatures reaching 30c.

15,000 spectators watched the dramatic game at Centre Court, which came to a win of 6-4 7-5 6-4. Recapturing the Olympic spirit from last Summer, BBC’s viewing figures reached an impressive peak with an audience of more than 17 million, an increase on last year’s final when Murray lost to Roger Federer. BBC Sport also saw its highest online live viewing since the 2012 Olympics.

Andy climbed straight into the stadium after his victory to see his mother Judy and girlfriend Kim Sears. Prime Minister David Cameron, Victoria Beckham, Ronnie Wood, Hollywood actors Bradley Cooper and Gerard Butler, and footballer Wayne Rooney were among those in the crowd showing their support for the 26 year old Scot.

His victory won him a whopping £1.6 million in prize money.

Andy later tweeted: “Can't believe what's just happened!!!!!!!”
