BT Digital Music Awards

Tuesday 3rd October 2006

Hosted by Edith Bowman

Please find nominations below with winners highlighted in red.

Hundreds of musicians, celebrities, and music industry professionals last night flocked to Camden’s legendary Roundhouse, where Edith Bowman announced the winners of the BT Digital Music Awards 2006.

Lily Allen, Lemar, Lorraine, White Stripes and The Streets all walked away with gongs on the night, with Peter Gabriel picking up a special ‘Pioneer Award’ recognising his contribution to the world of digital music over the years – a first for the BT Digital Music Awards.

This year’s big winners were Muse and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke who each walked away with a two awards a-piece. Other winners on the night included Lily Allen for ‘Best Pop Artist’, McFly for ‘Best Official Website’, NME for ‘Best Music Magazine’, MySpace for ‘Best Innovation’ and London Elektricity for Best Podcast. There were 19 awards presented on the night, 13 of which were voted for by music fans via www.dma06.com and six of which were decided by a panel of experts.

Another first this year was the ‘Best Unsigned Artist’ award, which was won by three-piece band, The Wonderfuls, fresh out of the thriving Brighton live scene. They fought off tough competition from eight other unsigned acts shortlisted by Channel4.com/music for the once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase their talent in front of the 1000-strong audience at The Roundhouse.

The Wonderfuls weren’t the only ones to take to the stage at the awards. Hip Hop star Plan B performed an acoustic version of his song ‘No More Eating’, Rock School’s Lil’Chris belted out his hit single ‘Checkin’ it Out’ and Nate James treated the audience to a stunning performance of ‘Justify Me’ alongside members of the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Other fantastic performances came from Sandi Thom, famed for broadcasting her live gigs on the internet earlier this year, winners in the ‘Best Electronic Artist/DJ’ category, Lorraine and Captain who performed an excellent version of their song ‘Frontline’.

Music fans that weren’t lucky enough to bag a ticket to this exclusive event can catch all of the action by tuning in to two special Channel 4 programmes, both presented by Alex Zane, dedicated to the awards ceremony and digital music. A 15-minute ‘teaser’ programme will be broadcast at midnight on Saturday 7th October, with the extended programme going out at the same time on Saturday 21st October.

The awards are supported by the BPI, the UK’s record trade association, the Official UK Charts Company, Phonographic Performance Ltd, The Mobile Entertainment Forum and the Association of Independent Music.

Gavin Patterson, group managing director consumer for BT says: “2006 has been a really great year for digital music, which has helped make this year’s awards even more exciting and harder to call than ever before. We’re delighted with the sheer quality of all shortlisted artists and winners.”

BT is dedicated to enabling the digital media marketplace and committed to developing and producing cutting-edge broadband technology and applications.
