National Television Awards Reveals Shortlist as Stars Battle for Honours on TV’s Biggest Night of the Year

In a remarkable revival of his fortunes the British public have voted to short-list Noel Edmonds in two categories in the 2006 National Television Awards. And if the votes keep coming in and he wins on November 1st, it will be the biggest comeback in television history. Edmonds has never won a coveted National TV Award, although he was short-listed a decade ago for Noel’s House Party before he sensationally parted company from the BBC.

But the Deal Or No Deal host faces strong competition from Paul O’Grady enjoying a successful run with his new teatime birth at Channel 4, Ant & Dec, Jonathan Ross, and Davina McCall in the Most Popular Presenter category. Edmonds and his programme also makes it into the Most Popular Daytime category along with Neighbours, This Morning and The New Paul O’Grady Show, the latter two, both previous winners in this category, are strong contenders.

Meanwhile Ant & Dec, the winners of eight NTAs over the past five years, have been voted onto a record four NTA short lists this year - Most Popular Entertainment Programme, Most Popular Entertainment Presenter, Most Popular Quiz Show and Most Popular Reality Programme with I’m A Celebrity.

Dancing, singing, skating, chatting and clowning are the order of battle in the Entertainment category, with Strictly Come Dancing, The X Factor, Dancing on Ice, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and Ant & Dec’s Takeaway all hoping to take away the trophy.

And the popular Tyneside pair could end Chris Tarrant’s seven-year award monopoly with Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? in the Quiz Show category, against Ant & Dec’s Gameshow Marathon which is a contender for the first time. Previous winner ‘Have I Got News for You’ and newcomer Jimmy Carr’s ‘8 out of 10 cats’ also make the final four.

The brand new category of TV Contender - to accommodate the massive interest in reality TV shows and the emergence of “reality celebrities” - sees drama queen Nikki and ex-boyfriend Pete, Big Brother’s winner, go head-to-head for the new award, as well as Chantelle the non-celebrity who won Celebrity Big Brother. Also making it onto the short list for Most Popular TV Contender is Carol Thatcher, who was crowned Queen of the Jungle in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

Jo Frost’s Supernanny, whose skills are showing parents how to control their unruly children, is nominated for the second time as Most Popular Factual programme. She is up against David Attenborough’s Planet Earth, Top Gear and the TV show that gives thieves, vandals and fraudsters a hard time, Bad Lad’s Army: Officer Class.

Three top US shows have been voted onto this year’s shortlist. Will & Grace, in the Most Popular Comedy category, Desperate Housewives - which comes face to face with Bad Girls in what promises to be the catfight of the year - and LOST, which is up against last year’s winner Doctor Who in the Most Popular Drama category.

In what is always an eagerly awaited and fiercely contested category, Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks all make it onto the short list for Most Popular Serial Drama, with Corrie fighting to regain its crown from last year’s winner EastEnders.

A record 1.5million votes have already been cast over the summer to select the list of nominees. The final stage of voting is now open to choose the winners. Sir Trevor McDonald will host the glittering, star-studded ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall where this year’s winners will be announced. The National Television Awards, which attracts audiences of up to 14 million, will be screened on Wednesday 1st November on ITV1.

Jack and Kelly Osbourne team up together for the very first time to present the National Television Awards ITV2 coverage. The brother and sister duo from the world’s most famous TV family are certain to offer their own personal take on TV’s biggest night of the year. So anything can happen, and probably will!

Jack and Kelly will also be dropping in on the ITV1 ceremony.
