Young Heroes Awards

Movie star Nicole Kidman was the surprise star attraction at the Closer Young Heroes Awards ceremony when she dropped into the ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel, London.

Nicole heard about the children being presented with awards for their bravery and caring attitudes and rushed in for a flying visit in to see the winners. “I had to see them and give them my congratulations. They are amazing.”

She joined a host of showbiz stars who were moved to tears by the stories of the seven youngsters who had showed remarkable courage in dealing with trauma and difficulties.

Coleen McLoughlin presented the Carer of the Year Award to Danielle Ingham, from Hartlepool, who devotes her spare time to looking after her six-year-old sister who is disabled and cannot do anything for herself. Danielle also helps her parents so their lives are easier.

“Danielle is an amazing person and a credit to her family,” said Coleen. “All the winners are incredible and it is uplifting to hear their stories. They certainly deserve their awards.”

The annual ceremony, organised by Closer magazine, also handed awards to a 14-year-old boy who saved his best friend from drowning and a three-year-old who battled back to health after being left for dead by a hit-and-run driver.

“It is a very moving ceremony and these youngsters display courage way beyond their years,” said Closer editor Jane Johnson. “We never cease to be amazed by what they can do and how they react to adversity. They are fantastic kids.”
