Morgan Stanley Great Briton Awards 2006

The Morgan Stanley Great Briton Awards now in its third year is the annual award ceremony celebrating outstanding British achievement, developed by Morgan Stanley in partnership with The Daily Telegraph.  The prestigious ceremony hosted by Clive Anderson, the former barrister best known for TV shows ‘Whose Line is it Anyway’ and ‘Clive Anderson Talks Back’ will be held for the second successive year at the historic Guildhall located in the heart of the City of London, a grand and fitting backdrop for such a Great British occasion.

Members of the public have been nominating their Great Britons across a number of categories:  Arts, Sport, Business, Science & Innovation, Creative Industries, Campaigning and Public Life.  Specialist shortlist judges, made up of experts in their fields will narrow these nominations down to three nominees in each category. Some of the nominations received so far include Arts: David Hockney, Dame Helen Mirren, Antony Gormley, Public Life: David Walliams, Sir Jonathan Miller, Andrew Morrish (inspiring head teacher in East London), Sport: Darren Clarke, Joe Calzaghe, Shelley Rudman, Business: Stuart Rose (CEO of Marks & Spencer), John Bird (co-founded the Big Issue), Sir Terry Leahy (CEO of Tesco). Campaigning: Tony Juniper (Vice –Chair of Friends of the Earth International) Irene Khan (she is the first woman, the first Asian and the first Muslim to hold the position of Amnesty International Secretary General), David Buckland (artist and film maker who founded and leads the Cape Farewell project, which brings together scientists and educators to raise awareness of climate change). The final nominees will be announced on 2nd January 2007.
 
Category winners will be selected by the final judging panel comprising
Lord Seb Coe, Trevor Phillips, Dr David Starkey, Viscount David Linley, David Hempleman-Adams, Richard Lambert, Baroness Sarah Hogg, Helen Alexander, Charles Dunstone, & Victor Blank.

The overall winner, the Morgan Stanley GREAT BRITON of 2006 will be decided by the judging panel and announced on the night of the awards.  Last year Lord Coe was named Great Briton of 2005 for his leadership of the Olympic 2012 campaign and David Cameron the Leader of the Conservative Party was the guest speaker.
