Dames get ready to do battle at film critics’ awards

Dames Helen Mirren and Judi Dench will go head-to-head for Actress of the Year and British Actress of the Year at the 27th Awards of the London Film Critics’ Circle to be held in aid of the NSPCC at London’s Dorchester Hotel on Thursday 8 February 2007. In a nominations list that boasts the best of British, the legendary duo is joined by Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson and James McAvoy.

Helen Mirren has been nominated for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in ‘The Queen’ and Judi Dench for her acclaimed performance in ‘Notes on a Scandal’. In the Actor of the Year category Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) will tussle it out with Richard Griffiths (The History Boys), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Jeff Daniels (The Squid and the Whale) and David Strathairn (Goodnight, And Good Luck).

British film ‘The Queen’ crowns the list of nominees with six nominations including The Attenborough Award, British Film of the Year and Film of the Year. It faces strong competition in the latter from ‘The Departed’, ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, ‘Volver’ and the 9/11 reconstruction, ‘United 93’.

Over in the directors’ corner, Pedro Almodóvar (Volver), Paul Greengrass (United 93), Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) and Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) will square up to Hollywood heavyweight Martin Scorsese (The Departed) for Director of the Year Award.

The Dilys Powell Award for outstanding contribution to cinema will be presented to Leslie Phillips who has also been nominated for British Supporting Actor of the Year for his role in Venus.

The prestigious awards ceremony will be presented by broadcasters Mariella Frostrup and Paul Gambaccini at the Dorchester Hotel in London.
