Coldplay & Green Day Triumph At The MTV Europe Music Awards 2005
Coldplay and Green Day triumphed at the MTV Europe Music Awards with two awards apiece. Coldplay won awards for Best Song for ‘Speed Of Sound’ and Best UK & Ireland Act while Green Day won awards for Best Album for ‘American Idiot’ and Best Rock at the Awards which aired live from the Atlantic Pavilion, Lisbon, Portugal.
The global live music event, which was hosted by the inimitable Borat Sagdiyev from the Sacha Baron Cohen arsenal of comedy characters, featured live performances by Akon, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Gorillaz & De La Soul, Green Day, Madonna, Pussycat Dolls, Robbie Williams, Shakira, System Of A Down and The Black Eyed Peas. Celebrating the music that young people in Europe love, the event featured 29 categories and generated a record-breaking 13 million votes online and via WAP.
Show highlights included Madonna opening the show from a giant mirror ball in the first worldwide TV performance of ‘Hung Up’, Coldplay's visually stunning performance of the Kraftwerk inspired ‘Talk’, the sassy Pussycat Dolls dramatic arrival at the venue by police escort, Gorillaz technically pioneering ‘Feel Good Inc’ in hologram-style 3D animation with De La Soul live on stage, Akon's jungle-paradise themed performance of ‘Belly Dancer’, Green Day's pyrotechnic-laden ‘Holiday’, Robbie Williams’ uplifting rendition of ‘Trippin’ complete with 12-piece choir, Borat hijacking The Black Eyed Peas performance of ‘My Humps’ with some very inept dancing, Foo Fighters incredible laser performance of D.O.A; Shakira's powerful diatribe to an ex-lover with ‘Don't Bother’ and System Of A Down bringing the show to a forceful close with ‘Bring Your Own Bomb’.

Free Your Mind Award Sir Bob Geldof
The man behind Live 8, Sir Bob Geldof, was awarded the MTV Europe Music Awards 2005 ‘Free Your Mind’ Award. This award is based upon the ideals of MTV's global ‘Free Your Mind’ Campaign, which aims to highlight humanitarian issues and encourage freedom from all kinds of intolerance and prejudice.

Host Borat brought the house down with his comedy sketches and irreverent jokes which included a crashing arrival on stage as his jetpack got caught in the speakers, spanking a member of the audience for chatting to a friend during his performance and a detailed demonstration of Kazakhstani folk dancing techniques.
Guest presenters at the star-studded ceremony included Alison Goldfrapp, Anastacia, Brittany Murphy, Craig David, Diego Luna, Gael Garcia Bernal, Jared Leto, John Legend, Luis Figo, Nelly Furtado, Nuno Gomez, Sean Paul, Shaggy, Sugababes, tATu.
New features of the MTV Europe Music Awards 2005 included Europe's first ever, live, up-to-the-minute news and photos delivered magazine-style direct to phones via WAP. In addition, the MTV Europe Music Awards first ever live videochat, hosted by ex Skunk Anansie vocalist Skin, took place live backstage at the Awards.
Sponsored by LG Mobile and Replay Blue Jeans, the MTV Europe Music Awards aired to a potential worldwide audience of more than 1 billion people.
