Elle Style Awards 2011

ELLE STYLE AWARDS 2011

The Grand Connaught Rooms, London
By Christina Adamidou

This February 14th saw the celebration of ELLE’s one and only true love – Fashion. The ELLE Style Awards, held at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London, honoured the crème de la crème of style.

Host of the magazine bash along with editor, Lorraine Candy, was quirky fashionista Alexa Chung. Harry Potter star, Emma Watson stole the show as she was crowned Style Icon of the year. She was presented the award by the legendary Vivienne Westwood who probably didn’t think Emma was as well-known, asking, “Who’s Emma Watson?”

Other winners of the night included Coco Rocha who took the gong for Best Model and Helena Christensen, who was given special honour for Her Outstanding Contribution to Fashion. Named best British designer was Christopher Kane and fashion guru and film-maker Tom Ford was recognized on an international level. The Nation’s sweetheart, Cheryl Cole, won for Best Music Act.

After having won for best actress at the BAFTAS, Natalie Portman was awarded the same title at this year’s ELLE Style Awards for her role as mad ballerina in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, a role for which she is hotly suggested for an Oscar. Unfortunately, the heavily pregnant US star was unable to attend the awards. However, another on-screen goddess, Blake Lively took the gong for Best TV Star.

So the all important question – who wore what?
When reflecting upon the celeb’s fashion choices, all we can say is – 2011 is the year of colour.
Instead of getting a red carpet drenched in rain drops, this time round, in not so typical February British weather, we saw clear skies and gorgeous gowns in a rainbow of bright hues. This year’s leading ladies dressed to impress with a swerve of au courant picks that were perfectly in touch with this one of this season’s hottest trends – colour blocking.

X-Factor judge, Cheryl Cole, was the lady in red at this star-studded event, while Gossip Girl won London over in an ocean blue Emilio Pucci ruffled halter gown, complemented with purple Christian Louboutin purple heels and a heap of gold accessories. Samantha Cameron, the creative director of the luxury brand Smythson, looked fantastic in a Philip Lim electric-blue number. Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, who was named Breakthrough Talent, opted for a sade green dress and Pixie Geldof definitely stood out in a white and purple printed backless maxi gown.

Another red carpet trend we saw all on the rage, were nude tones. Proving that she earned the title, Emma Watson chose a neutral coloured short and sweet cut out dress with matching nude heels. Award-winning pop sensation, Ellie Goulling also opted for the hot nude hue while Canadian model, Coco Rocha teamed a cream lace dress with white shoes.

In addition to the inspiring hues, we were delighted to see a terrifically turned out collection of fresh faces (Karen Gillan, Corinne Bailey Rae, Eliza Doolittle, we are looking at you) as well as fashion favourites like Alexa Chung, Fearne Cotton and Next Young Designer, Meadham Kirchoff.
