Lord Of The Rings ‘The Fellowship Of The Ring’ was the biggest winner at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards, scooping up an impressive four awards. The movie – largely overlooked by the Oscars – won gongs for Best Movie, Best On-Screen Team, Best Action Sequence and finally the inaugural Best Virtual Performance award for it’s computer-generated star, Gollum.
Eminem also had a good night, scooping ‘Best Male Performance’ and ‘Best Male Breakthrough Performance’ for his movie debut as Jimmy Smith in ‘8 Mile’. Accepting the award the rapper quipped “I can’t believe I beat Mariah [Carey] for her role in Glitter’.
But the real stars of the night were David and Victoria Beckham, who wowed the crowds and made their first ever appearance at the MTV Movie Awards to present the inaugural ‘Best Transatlantic Breakthrough Award – as voted for by the viewers of MTV UK & Ireland – to Irish star Colin Farrell. Farrell beat off stiff competition for the award from Jude Law, Rosamund Pike, Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom. Receiving his award from Victoria Beckham he joked that his mum had voted for him online “24,000 times”.
In keeping with the tradition of the MTV Movie Awards, skits from the very biggest movies were performed by some of the A-list attendees. Ceremony hosts Justin Timberlake and Seann William Scott parodied ‘Matrix Reloaded’, whilst Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu spoofed themselves with an alternative version of ‘Charlie’s Angel’s 2’.
Music performances came from Pink (who gave the world debut of her forthcoming single ‘Feel Good Time’ from ‘Charlies Angels 2’ with a stage full of motorcycles and beach-goers), 50 Cent and TATU (who performed alongside 175 dancers and gym-clad schoolgirls).
