Broadchurch: The Suspects
Who murdered Danny Latimer?
ITV’s latest crime drama Broadchurch starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman follows the mysterious death of 12 year old Danny Latimer, after his body is discovered on the beach of a seaside town. Even with one episode to go, theories and guesses are flying around social networks and water coolers, but viewers are still none the wiser.
Here is a look at some of the most popular suspects:
DI Alec Hardy (Tennant):
After arriving in the village for a quieter life in the police force, a child murder drags up the media barrage that surrounded his last case after the killer of a young girl walked away scot free. Is it just a coincidence that Danny’s death coincided with his relocation? Although, the amount of time and effort he has put into the investigation, this seems quite unlikely
This insomniac, alcoholic clergyman has troubled audience members from Episode 1. Tutor to Danny in computer club, Paul would have spent a lot of time with the murdered boy, perhaps a little too much…
Tom Miller (Adam Wilson)
Upon the discovery of his ‘friend’s’ demise, DS Ellie Miller’s (Colman) son quickly deleted texts from his phone from Danny and was also caught attempting to destroy his laptop. Reverend Coates also informed DI Hardy he broke up a fight between the two young boys. It is now evident the friendship was no more, so perhaps another scuffle simply got out of hand?
Husband to Beth and father to the deceased, it has been revealed Mark has been having an affair with blonde Australian hotel owner Becca Fisher. Did Danny find out about the affair and threaten to reveal all? Did Mark try to shut him up?
Becca Fisher (Simone McAullay)
Would the owner of the Traders’ Arms Hotels do everything to keep her affair with a married man from becoming public knowledge for the sake of her hotel business? Also, does her moonlighting as a drug dealer have any connection to £500 found under Danny Latimer’s mattress?
The psychic receiving messages about Danny’s death. Does he possess a higher power, or was he present at the murder?
This dog walker with a dark past and a very bad smoking habit, was found to be in possession of Danny’s skateboard and mobile phone. However, she insists she saw her long lost son, Nige, disposing of Danny Latimer’s body. After revealing her former husband and Nige’s biological father was a paedophile and child killer, is she covering her back by informing police the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree?
Nige Carter (Joe Sims)
Brought in for questioning, creepy bald plumber Nige had been pheasant hunting with his co worker Mark’s son, Danny, without his parent’s permission. Was there an accident while they were poaching birds, or was it just an excuse to get the boy alone? Also against him in the police investigation, is biological mother Susan is adamant she saw Nige disposing of the body, or at least someone who looks like him…
Joe Miller (Matthew Gravelle)
DS Miller’s husband is the suspect who is favourite to be crowned the Broadchurch killer. The stay-at-home dad spends a lot of time with the boys at the skate park, and bears a more than a passing resemblance to fellow follicly challenged suspect, Nige Carter. He neglected to tell his wife about the fight between Danny & son Tom, and didn’t tell her about a secret paintballing trip. Are there any other secrets he is keeping? Ellie said to Susan Wright ‘I don’t believe you didn’t know what was going on under your own roof’, will those words come back to haunt her?
Or course, it is possible all viewers have been misled, and the killer may have not even entered the frame. Tune in to ITV1 on Monday 22nd April for answers
