Monday 7th August 2006

Rambert Dance Company

Rambert Dance Company is thrilled to announce an exciting new collaboration with fashion designer Roland Mouret during the autumn tour of its 80th anniversary year. Mouret will design the costumes for two new works by Rambert’s emerging choreographers: Transit by Melanie Teall and Verge by Cameron McMillan.

Transit premières at High Wycombe on Wednesday 11 October and Verge premières at Sadler’s Wells on Tuesday 14 November. These two works were created for the Company’s 2006 Workshop Season, and have been promoted into Rambert’s main repertoire during the autumn 2006 tour.

French-born designer Roland Mouret, has established a reputation as a leading international fashion designer.  His sensual appreciation of women’s figures inspires his stunning creations, which have become something of a fashion phenomenon over the past few years. Nicole Kidman, Sienna Miller, Demi Moore and Scarlett Johansson are just a few of his loyal supporters.

Roland Mouret commented:
“For me everything starts from the movement of fabric over the body.  Dance is the greatest expression of this movement and for me to be able to design costumes with Rambert, from the concept stage, is the fulfilment of a long ambition to work with dancers – and these dancers are some of the best.”

Rambert’s Artistic Director, Mark Baldwin commented, “This is such an exciting collaboration for Rambert and our two emerging choreographers – to be working with one of the world’s most renowned fashion designers. Roland’s enthusiasm and artistry will add another layer to the two works, enriching the whole creative experience.”
Transit by Melanie Teall, is a fluid, atmospheric female solo, full of muscular energy and inspired by the phenomenon of the planet Venus in transit. Transit is performed to extracts from Eric Serra’s soundtrack to the film Leon. Verge by Cameron McMillan is an ensemble piece for eight dancers, performed to an original electro-acoustic score composed by Elspeth Brook – a brilliant young composer and recent doctoral graduate from the Royal College of music

Ever since Marie Rambert set up the company 80 years ago, Rambert’s vision has been to incorporate the wider creative world into the sphere of dance. Her experience with Diaghilev’s famous Ballets Russes, introduced her to the power of collaborating with artists, musicians and designers, which is a template that Rambert still applies today.

Similarly, throughout its history, Rambert has placed great value on the need to support choreographic talent from within the Company. Over the years it has developed some of the finest British choreographers of the 20th and 21st century, including Frederick Ashton, Antony Tudor, Andrée Howard, Walter Gore, Christopher Bruce, current Artistic Director Mark Baldwin and Rafael Bonachela. This project is yet further proof of the opportunities and support it offers to its current dancers, providing the resources and encouragement to develop their choreographic talent.
