NEW YORK, NY (June 3, 2009) – Angelina Jolie has landed the #1 spot on Forbes’ 2009 Celebrity 100 list, making her the most powerful celebrity in the world. Jolie’s $27 million in earnings last year, and famous face, were enough to dethrone media maven Oprah Winfrey, who slips to the #2 rank after two consecutive years at the top. Winfrey is the highest earner, raking in $275 million over the past year. Madonna’s Hard Candy tour and continued presence in the tabloids helped the Material Girl rise to the #3 spot, up from #21 last year.
Forbes magazine’s cover star Beyonce Knowles (#4) remains in the Top Ten, having earned $87 million last year from her multi-platform empire (Obsessed, p. 80). These successful leading ladies bumped Tiger Woods (#5) down from last year’s #2 rank. Despite being sidelined for eight months due to a knee injury, Woods remains the highest paid athlete in the world. Bruce Springsteen (#6) returns to the list this year, thanks to a lucrative tour, while Steven Spielberg (#7) pulled in $150 million last year, due in large part to the success of the latest Indiana Jones movie. Rounding out the Top Ten are Jennifer Aniston (#8) and her ex Brad Pitt (#9) – who both earned big movie bucks and continued to top tabloid headlines – and Kobe Bryant (#10), who debuts in the Top Ten thanks to soaring popularity and endorsement deals following the Beijing Olympics.
