Take one in-demand Australian born, London based, producer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. Add a revered, critically lauded American soul singer and a Copenhagen based electro / soul singer. Not the most obvious make up for a group, but then again SugaRush Beat Company are no ordinary band. The trio –Jarrad 'Jaz' Rogers, Rahsaan Patterson and Ida Corr - hail from three different continents, span four countries, and their life affirming mixture of elasticated grooves, dark beauty and multi layered psychedelic funk have already attracted favourable comparisons with musical mavericks such as Prince, Avalanches and Outkast. While most acts would crumble under such comparisons, for SugaRush it is only the beginning.
The band's self titled debut album, a heady mix of infectious quirky pop & alternative soul is due for release in summer, and the single 'Gunshots And Candyfloss' was released through RCA on March 10th. With it's scattered, off-kilter beats, stabbing synths and the honey toned vocals of Rahsaan and Ida, 'Gunshots And Candyfloss' is a perfect introduction to SugaRush's unique technicolor world of 'Soulternative pop'.
SugaRush's conception began in late 2005 when singer Rahsaan Patterson, thousands of miles from home and looking to kill some time while on tour in Australia, booked some studio time. His producer for the day was Jaz Rogers, SugaRush's main alchemist, who's worked with many renowned artists including Lauryn Hill. The pair immediately clicked, creative sparks flew and before they knew it, they were regularly jetting between Rahsaan's LA base and Australia for writing sessions. The introduction of Danish soul sensation Ida Corr (who co-wrote and sang the recent Fedde Le Grand megahit 'Let Me Think About It') added regular stop-offs in Europe to the SugaRush international travel itinerary. And the rest, as they say, will be history.
SugaRush Beat Company have a fast rising reputation for stunning live performances and are playing the following shows:
