Amy Studt - Britains Avril Lavigne?

Ones To Watch

30th June 2003

AMY STUDT

One of the UK's brightest new talents AMY STUDT releases her debut album ‘False Smiles’ on June 30th.

Following the huge success of her debut single ‘Just A Little Girl’ in summer 2002, and the build up to the release her second single, ‘Misfit’ Amy Studt has been one of the most talked about and anticipated artists of the year even being compared to the anst ridden Canadian singer Avril Lavigne.

Amy is a unique talent. At just 16 years old, she shows a songwriting ability that shames artists far more senior and experienced and one listen to ‘False Smiles’ will tell you just how special she is.

Opening with the instantly recognisable gentle piano of ‘Just A Little Girl’, it takes only a few bars for the album to explode into life. ‘Misfit’ is a punky-pop  raspberry to all the shallow glamour crowd out there, and ‘Under The Thumb’ deals with the games played between boy and girl. ‘If Only’ and ‘Happy Now’ show Amy's gentler side - both haunting and beautiful in their own unique ways. Over the whole album, Amy shows to perfection her ear for both melody a train-stopping chorus as well as what a talented musician she is as she plays piano throughout.

On the 14 tracks on the album, Amy encapsulates the feelings and thoughts of a girl becoming a woman. A welcome and meaningful alternative to the sugary fluff and often emotionless pop of most other artists her own age, Amy is unique in providing a voice for this generation.

Amy has had some of the top names in music as writing partners, including David Eriksen (part of the awesome writing Murlyn), Rob Davies (who also co-wrote the Kylie smash ‘Can't Get You Out Of My Head’) and Karen Poole - one half of the hugely successful Alisha's Attic. Much of the recording was done in Norway and Sweden, and with time spent in the USA recently, Amy has become a very well travelled teenager.

Amy Studt is a name you are certain to hear lots this year, as she is all set to progress from bright young talent, to established star in 2003.
