Clive Agran

Ones To Watch

Thursday 16th September 2004

Carrying a scoreboard at this year‘s Open. "About as close to glory as I‘m ever likely to get," admitted Agran.

Now that Phil Mickelson has broken his duck, CLIVE AGRAN must be among those considered one of the finest golfers never to have won a major. Come to think of it, he has hardly ever won anything. With lifetime earnings of just over £11, he has had to be somewhat more inventive in his effort to make a living out of golf.

Since he writes off scratch and plays off a handicap of 13, he clearly wields a pen with more authority than he does a putter. "Writing about golf is almost as much fun as playing it," Agran claims, "and you don‘t lose nearly so many balls."

"The best thing about golf, apart from the opportunity to wear ridiculous trousers, is that it offers almost unlimited scope for humour. And I enjoy a good laugh almost as much as I do marzipan."

A regular contributor to most golf magazines and a fearless bunker player, Agran has also worked for Sky TV at numerous tournaments. "I‘m a gutsy interviewer who‘s not afraid to ask those awkward questions such as, how does it feel to have won?"

A renowned after dinner speaker much in demand in the less populated parts of East Sussex, he still nurtures the hope that one day he might turn pro. "Even at 55, you have to dream."
