Set in Langley, Virginia, the show revolves around ‘American Dad’ and mistrustful CIA agent Stan Smith (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) and his family. Stan is constantly on the look out for terrorists. He will do anything to protect his country, as evidenced by the terror-alert colour code on his fridge, and his frequent knee-jerk reaction of shooting holes in the toaster whenever the toast pops up!
Stan’s wife Francine (voiced by Wendy Schaal) is a typical housewife who has carefully concealed her party-girl personality for the sake of the conservative man she loves. Their daughter Hayley (voiced by Rachael MacFarlane) is an 18 year old community college dweller. Despite her father’s best efforts she has turned into a left-wing liberal. Steve (voiced by Scott Grimes) is Stan and Francine’s dorky son who, at the age of 13, seems to be on the verge of puberty but can’t quite make it! Steve is unhappy with his low social status and occasionally tries to take drastic steps to change it.
A slightly unusual member of the family is Roger (voiced by Seth MacFarlane), a sarcastic alien rescued by Stan from Area 51. Resentful at not being allowed to leave the house, he has resorted to drinking wine and smoking cigarettes. Last but not least is Klaus (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker), a German-talking goldfish that is the result of a mangled CIA experiment. Klaus lusts after Francine and will take any opportunity that comes his way!
Currently showing on BBC2, Season 1 of 'American Dad' features cameos from a host of stars including Carmen Electra, Patrick Stewart, Seth Green, Ron Livingston and Tori Spelling.
