John Travolta plays young upstart Danny Zuko, a tempestuous cool cat oozing teenage charm. His holiday romance with Olivia Newton-John’s straight-laced Sandy seems to be just that until the pretty but plain student turns up to enrol at Rydell High. Despite their puppy love, Danny’s new lady friend looks set to damage his street cred with the uber cool T-Birds gang unless the glamorous Pink Ladies, led by Stockard Channing’s feisty Rizzo, can put their newest charge through their own beauty school programme. From Franki Valli’s opening track, the journey to graduation is a music and dancing extravaganza, with more ups and downs than a prom-night hand jive.
