Ones To Watch

English National Ballet at the London Coliseum

Lose yourself in faraway lands, enchanting fairy tales and thrilling passion with three ballets that put the sparkle into the festive season.

With 67 top-quality dancers from 20 countries, a full symphony orchestra and glittering sets and costumes, English National Ballet brings the best elements of the West End together in each of its productions. This December, the Company returns to the London Coliseum with the much-loved Christmas favourite The Nutcracker, as well as The Sleeping Beauty and, in a new production for English National Ballet, the tragic love story Manon.

From the famous dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy to the enchanted hundred year sleep of Princess Aurora and the heart wrenching tragedy of Manon, English National Ballet’s performances will wow long standing ballet lovers and first time audiences alike.

For the first time in the Company’s 58 year history, English National Ballet will be performing Manon in London. Arguably the world-renowned choreographer Kenneth MacMillan’s masterpiece, it is a thrilling tragedy of a woman trapped between two lovers. Innocent girl or femme fatale, Manon becomes entangled in a web of passion, love and vanity in an epic adventure of infidelities, escapes, abductions and murders.

With sets and costumes by Gerald Scarfe and choreographed by Christopher Hampson, The Nutcracker is colourful and vibrant and gives an eccentric retelling of the classic Christmas ballet. Snowflakes dance out of a giant fridge, evil mice sword-fight in the dead of night and an origami bird whisks the heroine Clara away to the Kingdom of the Sweets.

MacMillan’s production of The Sleeping Beauty brings the splendour of the great Sleeping Beauty tradition to life and features his own contributions to the ballet. Combining grand sets and costumes, Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous score and displays of virtuosic dancing, The Sleeping Beauty is a dazzling showcase of classical ballet.
