1408 is psychological horror film directed by Mikael Hafstrom and adapted from a short story written by novelist Stephen King.
After a fruitless search into the supernatural, author Mike Enslin (John Cusack) begins to write books falsely claiming to have had supernatural experiences. His latest research finds him in New York City in a room at the notorious Dolphin Hotel with a ominous past. Determined to prove that it is not haunted, Enslin decides to stay the night.
Hotel manager (Samuel L Jackson) informs Enslin that more than fifty people have died trying to spend the night there. Enslin dismisses these claims and stays, unprepared for the horrors that lie ahead. He not only faces the ghosts of his hotel room but he is also forced to face his own personal demons.
1408 is as much a psychological thriller as it is horror film. Director Hafstrom uses sound and silence very effectively and John Cusack is well-suited to his role. The special effects are also worthy of note but the film doesn’t just resort to cheap scares. Guaranteed to make you jump!
