Full Frontal

Ones To Watch

by Peter Morris in Los Angeles on  May 20 2003

I think I’ve been seeing a lot of art house stuff lately and I fear that despite the star studded cast, and the efforts of STEVEN SODERBERGH behind the cameras, this one also falls into that genre - and I feel confident that Mr. S would fully agree with that description and that’s exactly how he wanted it to be!

Last year I interviewed SODERBERGH about “Oceans Eleven” and suggested that following on from his double Oscar nomination for “Traffic” and Erin Brockovichand winning, then  having huge box office success with “Oceans Eleven” he was probably the hottest property in Tinseltown and could pretty much make the phone book if he wanted - he replied:

"That may be true for now but wait ‘til they see my next one- then they may not be so keen!”.

His next film was to be is “Full Frontal”

To explain: this is SODERBERGH‘S first digital film, it was made on a budget of under 2 million dollars which meant that JULIA ROBERTS ("Confessions of a Dangerous Mind", "Ocean‘s Eleven", "America‘s Sweethearts"), DAVID HYDE PIERCE ("Frasier", “Down with Love” et al) CATHERINE KEENER (“Out of Sight”, “Being John Malkovich”, “8mm” ), MARY MCCORMACK (“K-Pax”, “Private Parts”, “The Big Tease”)  and DAVID DUCHOVNY (“The X-Files”, “Evolution” , “Return to Me” “Zoolander”) all worked for nothing along with a host of other well known faces including cameos from BRAD PITT and the head of Miramax films HARVEY WEINSTEIN.

The film is certainly a wry look at Hollywood and the film making process and the various characters who inhabit the world surrounding the movie makers - unfortunately it may prove to be a bit confusing on first look as it features a film within a film. OK it confused me too and I enjoyed it much better the second time around where I understood it more! Most of you on the other hand don’t get paid to watch it twice and interview those involved and may think it a pile of poo so you don’t bother - and who could blame you!

So if you’re up for an evening of dissecting Hollywood and arguing about what was really going on, you’ll love this. If not, probably best to wait for the video/DVD when you can go back and have a second look. Whatever you choose to do I’d like to recommend you go to the official website for the film (www.fullfrontal.com) and click on “the Rules”- I’d have printed them for you here but don’t want any copyright hassles from Miramax . The rules were what STEVEN sent out to all the actors he wanted to be in the film and when you see them
you’ll have a laugh and a better idea of what he was up to - it may even let you enjoy the film more.

What’s it about? Oh well JULIA ROBERTS plays an actress making a film with BLAIR UNDERWOOD (“LA Law”, “Just Cause”, “Rules of Engagement” ), CATHERINE KEENER is an agent about to leave her husband ( HYDE PIERCE) who also loses his job, MARY MCCORMACK is a masseuse who doesn’t do “extras”  ENRICO COLANTONI (“Galaxy Quest”, “A.I.”,”Stigmata”) plays an unknown theatre director who’s directing NICKY KATT (“Boiler Room”, “Insomnia”) as Hitler in a one man show. They’re all supposed to meet up at the birthday party of a big Hollywood producer (DUCHOVNY) that night but , of course, the route is not a smooth one.

There are some very funny moments and DUCHOVNY gets the ultimate “happy ending” but this is defintiely one for the “filmies.”
