Legally Blond 2: Red, White and Blonde

Ones To Watch

by Peter Morris in Los Angeles on July 16 2003

I have to say up front that I liked the first “Legally Blonde” film - I didn’t expect to but I did. I wish I could say I had the same experience with the sequel but that is not the case - so I’ll keep this fairly short and sweet.

The first film was basically “Barbie strikes back” just because someone  is beautiful doesn’t mean they can’t be smart too and REESE WITHERSPOON, as Elle Woods, is likeable enough to pull it off - it’s a variation on the underdog makes good theme.

For the sequel they’ve tried to mine the same vein but this time our heroine is taking on the old fogeys up on Capitol Hill over the issue of animal testing - why? Because she is trying to track down the birth mother of her adopted pet chihuahua so she can attend her wedding  of course! Ok the silly plot is perfectly in keeping with her ditzy personna but this film has almost none of the charm of the first, the cliches are practically bumping into each other  and despite a good supporting cast like SALLY FIELD (“Steel Magnolias” , ‘Mrs Doubtfire”, “Forrest Gump” et al) as a money driven politician, the excellent JENNIFER COOLIDGE (“Best in Show”, “American Pie 1,2& 3”, “A Mighty Wind” )  and American Comic legend BOB NEWHART - I’m afraid the script just wasn’t worthy of their capabilities and as a result became a little too preachy and predictable.
It’s not the worst film you could see this Summer but it is a major let down after the first one and so I’m afraid:
