Have you ever wondered what it would be like to spend a day in Jack Bauer's shoes? Well wonder no more as '24 - The Game' allows you to do just that. The hit series has arrived on PS2 and could be the most stylish and exciting game that PS2 gamers have ever experienced.
'24 - The Game' begins with Jack leading a team of CTU agents into a ship to prevent a dangerous toxin from being released. Honestly to say anything more would just ruin the experience for gamers. Part of '24's' success is being able to constantly surprise and shock, so to reveal anymore about the storyline would take that element away. Suffice to say regular characters show up throughout and, as with every season of '24', Kim gets herself into mortal danger.
Firstly 24 looks and sounds incredible. The graphics and the style of the game are so similar to the TV show that the game feels like an additional series. The idea is the '24 -The Game' bridges seasons 2 and 3 and answers many questions that viewers have. One of these is how on earth Kim Bauer got a job at CTU in the first place. The game keeps the split-screen style of the TV show and the infamous counter appears regularly to remind you how much time you've got left for your various missions. '24' regulars Kiefer Sutherland, Elisha Cuthbert, Carlos Bernard, Reiko Aylesworth, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Dennis Haysbert and James Badge Dale all give their voices to the game and do a great job in making the game feel almost real.
The missions are incredibly varied and ensure the game never feels dull or repetitive. A large part of the game is action, as you'd expect, but there are other missions thrown in such as interrogating a witness (which is great fun), defusing a bomb, taking down snipers, racing after enemies and retrieving data from a damaged PDA. The variety of missions really makes the gamer feel like they're in the game and ultimately part of the incredible '24' experience. Like the TV show I was constantly on the edge of my seat, gasping at plot twists and despairing at the stupidity of Jack's daughter, Kim Bauer.
Over the course of the game you can play as several different characters. You begin with Jack but as the storyline progresses you can control other characters such as Tony Almeida and Chase Edmunds. This adds a lot of fun to the game and variety. Whilst each character's gameplay is similar it's still good fun to be playing the different CTU characters.
Overall I have to say I loved '24 - The Game'. It's everything I could have wanted it to be and so much more. It does feel like you are in the episode and it's possibly the most involved I've ever felt in a PS2 games. I've read a few pieces criticising the game's playability but I didn't experience any problems. I found the gameplay easy to adjust to and immense fun. I suspect that some fans of the show expected too much from the game. I'm a huge fan of the show and I'm now a huge fan of the game. Let's hope they make another one soon.
