As well as representing his country he played in the Premier League for Manchester United, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United. He has also appeared in the Football League for Wigan Athletic, Leicester City, Charlton Athletic, Bradford City and Darlington. In the later part of his career, he played for Glentoran in the Irish League and Longford Town in the League of Ireland.
