2009 marked the centenary of the Ballets Russes, the legendary dance troupe founded by Diagalev in 1909. In the 1920s the Ballets Russes created a huge sensation around the world, with ground breaking works from choreographers including Nijinsky and Balanchine and collaborations with the top designers and artists of the day. Both Picasso and Coco Chanel designed for the Ballets Russes.
English National Ballet has direct lineage with the Ballets Russes, as it was founded by the Company's star dancer Alicia Markova.
Featured in the performance are costumes designed by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, exclusively for English National Ballet's Ballets Russes performances.
