May 17th 2011
Sadler Well’s Theatre
On May 17th 2011 at the Sadler Well’s Theatre the Northern Ballet’s Artistic Directors David Nixon and Patrick Doyle brought the powerful story of Cleopatra, a “courageous and compulsive woman” who “overturned convention and changed the course of history,” to the London stage. Paired with the masterful score by Claude-Michel Schönberg, composer of both Miss Saigon and Les Miserables, the ballet was a creative harmony of dance and music. Nixon himself said of Schönberg’s score, “the dance really comes out of the music. I feel that I respond to what he's written…It moves you, and you move to it.”
Bringing the premiere of London’s newest must-see ballet to life was the star-studded audience including: Lorraine Kelly, Ronnie Wood and Ana Araujo, Matt Lucas, Elen Rivas, Rupert Friend, Tasmin Lucia Khan, Jeremy Irons, Craig Revel Horwood, Gillian Anderson, Alice Dellal, Fay Ripley, Eddie Redmayne, Neil Tennant, Beverley Knight, Annie Mac, Jean Marsh, Chloe Moretz and Natalie Dormer. The stars applauded as ballerina Martha Leebolt playing Cleopatra stole the show.
